As a Controls Systems Technician at Cargill, you will play a vital role in ensuring the optimal performance and safety of our industrial control systems. This position demands a proactive and safety-conscious individual dedicated to problem resolution and maintaining high quality standards. You will be responsible for the safe and effective operation of standard maintenance tools, including power tools and basic electrical testing equipment. A key aspect of this role involves performing preventative maintenance procedures, interpreting mechanical and electrical schematics, and independently executing complex troubleshooting of both mechanical and electrical issues. Adherence to prescribed safety regulations and departmental policies is paramount for maintaining a secure work environment. Your responsibilities will also include preparing work areas, procuring necessary materials and tools, and completing post-maintenance activities such as documenting work performed and communicating findings.

Responsibilities

  • Uphold process and industry standards and specifications in all maintenance activities.
  • Operate standard maintenance tools, including power tools and basic electrical testing equipment, safely and effectively.
  • Execute preventative maintenance tasks, encompassing up to and including Annual PMs, on control systems and related equipment.
  • Accurately interpret and understand mechanical and electrical schematics.
  • Independently troubleshoot and resolve complex mechanical and electrical issues within control systems.
  • Adhere strictly to all prescribed safety rules, regulations, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to the development and promotion of proper safety practices within the team.
  • Identify the root cause of operational problems by observing control system devices, listening for anomalies, and utilizing precision measuring and testing instruments.
  • Understand and achieve certification in LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) procedures.
  • Identify necessary follow-up work and gather required materials, tools, and documentation for planned maintenance on control systems.
  • Conduct job site investigations as needed to determine the scope of work for reactive maintenance on control systems.
  • Prepare work sites for maintenance activities, including scaffolding and ensuring safety protocols are in place for control systems work.
  • Respond to and complete interruption work assigned by the immediate supervisor, moving to subsequent tasks as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Collaborate with the Maintenance Supervisor to resolve technical challenges encountered during control systems maintenance.
  • Complete all closeout activities, including tool inventory, parts reconciliation, sanitation tagging, and providing notification to production regarding completed work on control systems.
  • Communicate effectively through written daily pass-downs, detailing issues encountered and actions taken related to control systems.
  • Assist in establishing and implementing preventative maintenance procedures specifically for electronic controlled equipment, plant instrumentation, and plant data collection systems.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electronic controlled equipment, plant instrumentation, and plant data collection systems.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years of industrial maintenance experience, with a focus on control systems.
  • Strong aptitude in both electrical and mechanical systems, particularly within a controls environment.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret blueprints and other engineering drawings related to control systems.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting detailed blueprints, P&IDs, single-line diagrams, and wiring schematics for control systems.
  • Demonstrated strong personal safety philosophy and the ability to consistently follow all safety policies and procedures, actively identifying and correcting unsafe conditions.
  • Flexibility to work weekend and off-shift hours as required.
  • Programming and troubleshooting expertise, preferably with Allen-Bradley control systems.
  • Willingness to participate as a member of the Hazmat team.

Nice-to-haves:

  • Computer literacy and a strong desire to learn SAP/PPE systems relevant to maintenance operations.
  • Maintenance experience within a food processing environment, including familiarity with its specific control system challenges.
  • Proficiency in using typical test and calibration equipment, including RTD calibrators, digital multi-meters, and 4 to 20 mA calibration units, for control system instrumentation.
